Mission
Almondbury Community Café was an idea which originated in Churches Together Meetings. The aim was to work as members of the local churches, together with representatives from the community, to provide a much-needed amenity in the village of Almondbury.
Origin
Initial funding came from the three main churches, Anglican, Roman Catholic and Methodist, the National Lottery Fund, Kirklees Metropolitan Council, and a large benefactor from the local community.
Values
Those people who have worked with us have developed new friendships and understandings with each other, which help contribute to cohesion within the community and provide much needed interaction at a time of increasing social isolation.
We have no paid staff
The café started work with approx. 50 volunteers on a rota basis and this level of volunteering has continued ever since.
We are always in need of more volunteers, so if you are interested please contact us for more information.
Why Choose Us
We are now in our 20th year of operation, our aims remain unchanged, we provide a meeting place in the village, particularly for older people. We sell non-alcoholic drinks, snacks, sandwiches all day breakfasts and confectionary.
All our snacks and meals are provided at very reasonable prices. On Fridays we provide substantial lunches.
Local Councilors
We are non–party political but provide accommodation for elected representatives one Thursday each month.
All Welcome
We have policies in place concerning non-discrimination on grounds of race, gender, religion, or disability.
Use Local
We source all our supplies locally and where possible from the village shops and we can honestly say that we have contributed to regeneration of the village.
Giving Back
We are a non-profit organisation, any surplus made is given in grants to support local organisations, projects or individuals who are working for the good of others. On average we give in the region of £4000 per year to support good causes.
